The oceans are in trouble. Pollution, overfishing and climate change are all taking their toll on the wildlife and waters. It’s disheartening to see pictures of  beautiful marine mammals dying in fishing nets and hear of species becoming extinct. Closer to home, it’s terrible having our favourite beaches become dumping grounds for waste.

But it’s not all doom in the oceans. Dedicated individuals are giving their time and efforts to help the environment. You too can make a difference by taking part in ocean conservation. Read the rest of this entry »

Shark attacks – get a grip!

Afraid of sharks? Following two month of some very wild accounts of sharks in the press, it would be hard to blame the woman/man on the street for being terrified. We shark enthusiasts, divers and the conservation-minded have followed the news about attacks in the Red Sea and other locations with muted skepticism. But we’ve also been very disturbed by some of the reaction. A couple of shark attacks on tourists in the Red Sea became the reason for the authorities to go on a shark kill mission in the region. In the past week, several people in Australia have found their spot of fame by claiming they’d encountered Bull Sharks in the flooded streets (while the stories like this one  about a man forced to hide from a shark grow and become scarier, there are very few photographs to back these accounts). Having an event? Make it Green

In my years of working as a consultant, I planned and managed many events.  It was painful to see professionals in their fields give so little regard to the environment when it came to their events.  Not only did this oversight have negative consequences on the environment, it also cost the organisers of the event more money – sometimes, significantly more.  Many organisers have suffered bad publicity as a result of a poorly thought out event.
