The green label is everywhere. Consumers are willing to pay more if they feel they are getting greater “green value” for their money. Green consumers will be found anywhere where there is a product or service in demand. So naturally, companies will be keen to meet the demand.
It’s not only the “specialist” or “eco” companies catering to the environmentally-aware consumer but mainstream brands are going green. While you can’t change the world in one shopping basket, you can make an important contribution to the fight for a greener healthier world.
How can you buy green?
Green products and services cover many things. Examples include:
- Goods that minimise energy use in their production
- Goods that can help minimise waste (such as reusable bags, home insulation and compost pile kits)
- Recycled products
- Products made without the use of chemicals that harm the environment
- Products and services from companies with a solid record for good employment practice
- Fair traded goods
- Products made locally – or nearby – to minimise the energy required in transportation
- Agricultural produce from cruelty-free sources
- Organic products
- Seafood caught or produced in a manner creating the least negative impact
- Services that deliberately avoid investments and associations with companies and governments with poor human rights and/or environmental records (such as ethical savings accounts and pensions)
Good thing is, being a greener consumer doesn’t have to cost a small fortune. The efforts always pay off in the end – whether through longer-term savings to the consumer or through benefits to the environment. There are many hidden costs of non-green products (consider lightbulbs, fuel inefficient utilities and older motor vehicles).
Not only are you doing something positive for the environment, you’re also improving the health of your family and being economical in the long run.
